hmm, well that could definitely cause that group of asteroids to head for Earth, most of them missing and flying by...so yeah i suppose that could be a reason why 5+ asteroids hit...

have they confirmed that it's out there though, but we just haven't found it?

My book doesn't say they have found it, it just says they haven't discovered it yet...
