What did Sarah Harding mean when she said "the parental instinct of the Tyrannosaurus Rex is now academic" and Ian Malcolm replied with "Hang on, this is going to be bad."

Hmm...I guess she meant that it's now official for the "academic" records. I always figured it was something along those lines. You know, since they just saw it first hand, they can definitely put the debate to rest or something like that.

As for Malcolm, it seems that he saw the Rexes through the window charging at the trailers. So, he saw that impact coming. He wasn't really responding to Sarah. You can see him half chuckle at her statement, but his warning was in regards to the Rexes.

Interesting. I should have paid more attention to his facial expressions. I always thought that it was in conjunction with her statement. For some reason I popped in The Lost-World and started watching it. Right now it's just playing in the background. I can hear the T-Rex attack on the base-camp.

Yeah, if you look at him you can see him smile, then that smile fades and he looks off into the distance as he delivers the line.

I was actually thinking about watching all three of them again. I watched the trailers for JP and TLW yesterday. The TLW trailer makes it seem so epic, especially at the end of trailer.

It's the music that does it.

Yeah, I figured that was it.

Just back to the trailer scene a second, something confused me when watching it. When the AAV goes off the cliff, Malcom says "Mommy's very angry", meaning the Rex's have come for their baby. Then, around 3 minutes of T-Rex talk later, Sarah suddenly says something like "This isn't hunting behaviour Ian. They're searching. They came for their Infant!", which is a pretty obvious statement considering Malcom pointed that out earlier. Wasn't Sarah listening to Malcom when he said it or is this just an editing cock up?

Editing was cocked up,I had noticed that before.

It can't be an editing goof, because the two shots can't be reordered. If they put her line first, then the Rexes are already standing by the windows, and so they can't cut to the car being flipped.

My interpretation up until this point was that she was trying to explain that if they give the infant back, they'll be alright. You see them very fearful and pinning themselves up against the walls. They were afraid for their lives. Sarah could have been explaining that they weren't trying to kill them, they just wanted the infant. You can see that they only nudge the trailer, instead of just attacking it right away. That could be why she said it. She's prompting them to the plan of giving the infant back.

If nothing else, it would be a writing goof.

I see...which would also make Sarah's reply "the parental instinct of the Tyrannosaurus Rex is now academic" make sense and threfore Malcom's reaction to the Rex's return. This is like a giant jigsaw puzzle!
